Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract is a strain of bacteria isolated from mud found on King George Island in Antarctica. According to Dermaxime.com, it is a peptide that is classified as a protein derivative, and contains the following three amino acid residues: glycine, histidine and lysine. It is used in a number of anti-aging products because of its ability to regenerate and protect the skin by retaining moisture and water, heal wounds, increase collagen and elastin production, and improve hydration.

Studies of in vitro samples showed a 128% increase in collagen I production over 15 days; 81% in collagen IV; and 31% in elastin. Samples on 10 volunteers showed a marked improvement on the appearance of crows feet around the eyes after applying a cream containing 5% concentration of Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract twice daily for 30 days, with the maximum wrinkle depth reduction averaging around 50 - 60%. In another study, 45% improvement in hydration was seen in skin treated with cream containing this ingredient compared to a control cream (BioToxyl, a South African chemical firm). However, most in vitro and in vivo tests performed on Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract have been done by Lipotec, the Spanish firm responsible for producing and selling this ingredient to other cosmetic firms; very few independent studies corroborate these findings.

Safety Measures/Side Effects:

Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract is considered to be 100% safe by the Cosmetics Database, and is generally thought to be a safe ingredient that is not a sensitizer, irritant, and does not have any adverse side effects. However, the Cosmetics Database does note data gaps in the research of this ingredient and very little independent research was available.
