IOTA 96460 silicone elastomer gel (INCI/CTFA: Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (and) Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer) is becoming a favorite among formulators of high-end skincare and color cosmetics, thanks to its exceptional ability to modify skin feel. It is a blend of high-molecular-weight silicone elastomer and hydrogenated polyisobutene, appearing as a translucent paste.
IOTA 96460 demonstrates excellent compatibility during formulation blending and processing. It is important to note that, due to the nature of the gel, it does not truly "dissolve" in the oil phase but rather exists as a stable dispersion. At room temperature, it disperses easily into oil phases such as dimethicone, cyclic silicones, or hydrocarbons; simple stirring is sufficient to reduce system viscosity without the need for complex high-shear processing. For emulsion formulations, it is recommended to homogenize the oil phase separately before emulsification or to add the gel at the end, provided viscosity requirements are met. Additionally, if heating is required, it must be performed in a sealed container to prevent the evaporation of the silicone solvent, which could compromise stability.
This unique blending characteristic allows for uniform distribution in various oil-in-water or anhydrous products, imparting a dry, velvety-smooth skin feel and effectively reducing tackiness. A usage level of 1% to 20% is recommended to achieve a silky, luxurious texture.
