Both use cross-linked polymers of polydimethylsiloxane and vinyl polydimethylsiloxane as their core components. The presence or absence of silica significantly differentiates these two raw materials in actual formulations, directly impacting product texture, oil control, and suitable formulations.
Pure polydimethylsiloxane and vinyl polydimethylsiloxane cross-linked polymers are mostly in gel form, with silicone oil as the carrier. They offer a silky smooth feel, moderate oil control, and focus on soft-focus effects and oil-phase thickening while maintaining a certain level of moisture and preventing dryness. They are more suitable for primers, moisturizing foundations, anti-aging serums, cream sunscreens, and waterless creams. They are ideal for formulations that prioritize a silky smooth feel and don't require strong oil control. Adding silica primarily improves application smoothness and reduces the stickiness of sunscreen agents.
Cross-linked polymers (and) silica are composite powders. Silica significantly enhances oil absorption, resulting in a drier, more refined powder texture, a more pronounced soft-focus and blurring effect, and better sweat resistance and staying power, reducing makeup creasing and oiliness. It is more suitable for loose powder, pressed powder, matte foundation, matte lipstick, and oil-controlling primers, and is ideal for matte makeup on oily, acne-prone skin.
In terms of formulation dosage, gel-based products generally contain 2-8%; powder-based makeup can reach 5-15%. For moisturizing products, pure elastomeric gels are preferred; for matte, long-lasting makeup, composite powders incorporating silica are preferred.
