Methyl MQ silicone resin is formed by the condensation polymerization of M and Q siloxane units. Due to its film-forming, tackifying, and reinforcing properties, it is widely used in pressure-sensitive adhesives, cosmetics, coatings, and other fields. It is available in two main forms: solvent-based liquid and solid powder. Both have the same core chemical structure; the differences lie in their form, application methods, and suitable application scenarios.
Powdered MQ silicone resin is a white, loose powder with a solid content of 98-99%. It is almost solvent-free, resulting in higher storage and transportation efficiency. Its softening point is 80-220℃, and it needs to be pre-dissolved in solvents such as toluene, xylene, or silicone oil before use. Its advantages include high formulation freedom, allowing for adjustable solid content and no excess solvent introduction, making it suitable for solvent-free systems and high-temperature mixing. It is often used for reinforcing silicone rubber and high-solids-content pressure-sensitive adhesives. The disadvantage is the additional dissolution and dispersion process; incomplete dissolution can easily lead to particle residue.
Liquid MQ silicone resins are mostly finished products where the resin is dissolved in an organic solvent. They are transparent in appearance, with a solid content of 50-70%. They can be directly added after opening the box, eliminating the need for a dissolution step, making processing convenient, and the system is uniformly dispersed, with less likelihood of particle defects. However, because the product contains its own solvent, it is limited by flash point and volatile matter, making it unsuitable for solvent-free high-temperature formulations. Fire prevention measures are necessary during storage and transportation.
In terms of selection, powder formulations are preferred for those seeking high solid content and solvent-free processing; liquid MQ silicone resins are preferred for those prioritizing production convenience and uniform film consistency. The M/Q molar ratio is the key indicator determining film hardness and adhesion; the physical form is merely a difference in the physical carrier.
